Topic: United States government -“How a bill becomes a law”
Objectives:
  • Students will read an article with a partner to locate information
  • Students will discuss how a bill becomes a law
  • Students will make connections from the reading to a musical video and cloze activity
Materials:
  • Teacher laptop with internet connection and 3M projector with sound
  • Class whiteboard
  • Access websites listed below
  • Copies of “Kids Clerk House- how a bill becomes a law” article online or paper copies
Lesson Plan procedure:
Introduction:
  1. Show students the School House Rock music video titled “How a bill becomes a law” as an introduction to topic. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VxT7QjlvDqM
Discuss information from music video.

  1. Distribute copies for the students or have them view online version, use the information from this site, students will read through article with a partner.

Next, students will complete this cloze activity together as a class power point using information from the previous article.
  1. Musical strategy:
Contemplate - Use a piece of music from the period being studied and have students describe what they are hearing and explain how it reflects their understanding of what was happening.
